Mica General Description
Named from the Latin micare, to shine or glitter, the mica group of minerals is made up of 37 varieties of complex hydrous aluminium phyllosilicates which have been valued for centuries for their unique physical properties. Muscovite, also known as white or potash mica, and to a lesser extent phlogopite, are the most important micas commercially and have uses in insulation, joint compounds, paints, rubber, cosmetics and oilwell drilling.
Properties and Uses
All micas belong to the monoclinic crystal system and have perfect basal cleavage allowing them to delaminate into translucent sheets. Individual sheets are chemically resistant, hydrophilic, dielectric, insulating,reflective, refractive, mechanically tough, lightweight, flexible and elastic. Of the commercially important micas, muscovite is colourless to pale grey, green or brown and is thermally stable up to around 500 ℃. Phlogopite has similar properties but is generally yellowish brown to brownish red in color and is stable at higher temperatures, up to 900 to 1000 ℃.
